Rethinking Retirement

Rethinking Retirement: A tougher economy has Americans developing new savings and investment strategies for their Golden Years

If you're like a growing number of Americans, you're probably facing some uncomfortable realities that may be forcing you to rethink your retirement.

A growing crisis of confidence was revealed in The Hartford's latest survey of a cross-section of Americans ages 45 and older. Those survey results, released Dec. 14, show that respondents are increasingly looking to Social Security to meet their financial needs in retirement, yet very few think it actually will.

Survey Highlights

  • Americans are searching for stability as they watch their nest eggs languish — at the same that Congress is grappling with the future of Social Security and the retirement age.
  • Social Security and other government-sponsored pensions are increasingly the top source of retirement income for Americans. Two in five respondents now identify Social Security and other government pensions as their No. 1 source of retirement income, up from one in four in 2006.
  • Yet most people realize that Social Security will not provide enough income for them to continue their lifestyle in retirement, a sentiment that has grown steadily over the past five years (85.4 percent in 2010 compared 81.1 percent in 2006).
  • Retirement priorities are undergoing a fundamental shift. Keeping up with daily expenses for food, shelter and other basic needs is increasingly the top concern of retirees, even if it means working longer.
  • Most American couples have a dwindling sense of confidence that their combined sources of income will be sufficient in retirement, and a growing number are uncertain about when they'll be able to retire.

The Hartford's latest research findings on retirement are featured in the special advertising sections of Fortune magazine which will be on newsstands December 13. For more details on the results, download your copy of The Hartford's 2010 Investment and Retirement Surveyimage
