Barron’s Recognizes The Hartford Mutual Funds

The Hartford Mutual Funds was named one of Barron's best mutual fund families for 2009, earning the number 10 spot out of 61 fund families (source: Barrons, 2/1/10; ranking based on one-year performance as of 12/31/09).1

Barron's, America's premier financial magazine and source of market analysis and insight, conducts an annual, year-end review of fund company performance. Its rankings are based on total assets under management and mutual fund performance across five categories: U.S. equity, world equity (combines global and international funds), mixed equity (holds stocks and bonds), taxable bond, and tax-exempt bond. The Hartford Mutual Funds earned strong rankings in the domestic equity and mixed equity categories.

How Barron's Ranks the Top Fund Families
To qualify for the Lipper*/Barron's Fund Survey, a fund family must have at least three funds in Lipper's general U.S. stock category, one in world equity, at least one mixed-equity fund, at least two taxable-bond funds, and one tax exempt offering.

Each fund's returns are adjusted for 12b-1 fees, which are used for marketing and distribution expenses. The funds usually add these fees back into returns.

Sales charges are not included in the calculation of returns. Each fund's return is measured against those of all funds in its Lipper category. That leads to a percentile ranking, with 100 the highest and 1 the lowest, which is then weighted by asset size, relative to the fund family's other assets in its general classification. If a family's biggest funds do well, that boosts its overall ranking.  Poor performance in a big fund has a big effect on the ranking.

The score is multiplied by the weighting of its general classification, as determined by the entire Lipper universe of funds. The category weightings for the one-year results: U.S. equity, 41.42%; world equity, 14.49%; mixed equity, 16.27%; taxable bond, 23.16%; tax-exempt bond, 4.66%.
